In 1990, Sharon Rowe loaded up a table on 6th Avenue in New York City for Earth Day and put reusable bags in front of strangers.
By the end of the day, thousands of bags were gone.
She'd started ECOBAGS the year before, in 1989, as a new mom who was trying to build something she actually believed in. Single-use plastic was the obvious problem. A well-made reusable bag was the obvious answer. She just went ahead and made it.
